Savannah, Ga. – In the battlefield of the microbial ocean, scientists have known for some time that certain bacteria can exude chemicals that kill single-cell marine plants, known as phytoplankton.

From the ASM blog: To address the major areas that may be affected by changing microbial processes, the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Geophysical Union convened a Colloquium in March 2016.

To recognize his outstanding efforts in instruction, graduate student David Miklesh has been awarded the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, with which UGA honors teaching assistants who excelled in their performance. Congratulations, David!

V. Ruth Pannill, an IDS student in Marine Chemistry under the advice of Patricia Medeiros, was awarded 2nd place in the poster session competition at the 4th Southeastern Biogeochemistry Symposium (SBS) held at the University of Georgia from March 31 to April 2.

The Department of Marine Sciences and ECOGIG have wrapped up our 4th year of the Southeastern Biogeochemistry Symposium this past weekend. This 2-day weekend 150-200-person symposium was modeled after the highly successful Southern California Geobiology Symposium.
