Dr. Samantha Joye returns to the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon oil spill site

Image:

Dr. Samantha Joye together with colleagues will return to the Gulf of Mexico on board the research vessel Atlantis and dive to the seafloor using the human occupied submersible Alvin to study the environmental impacts of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon blowout.  They will take samples from the oil-contaminated sediment layer to study its effect on benthic ecosystems and they will explore natural methane seeps in the Gulf of Mexico.   This research is part of EcoGIG (Ecosystem Impacs of Oil and Gas Inputs to the Gulf) funded by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative and the National Science Foundation.
