Coastal sustainability: A cross-site comparison of salt marsh persistence in response to sea-level rise and feedbacks from social adaptations

Drs. Merryl Alber and Clark Alexander, are part of a team of 9 researchers from 7 institutions who have received a $2 million dollar grant by the NSF Coastal SEES (Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability) Program, to evaluate the vulnerability of salt marshes to rising sea levels. The research will be conducted at the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems, GA (GCE)Virginia Coast Reserve, VA (VCR) and Plum Island Estuary, MA (PIE) Long Term Ecological Research study sites. The goals of the project are to evaluate how marsh vulnerability to sea level rise compares across sites with different physical and social drivers and adaptation options, and to understand which marsh protection actions local stakeholder groups favor in the context of the broader sustainability and economic value implications of feasible adaptation options.
